When an opportunity arose for me to embark on a new chapter at HMP Prison, I eagerly seized it without any trace of nervousness. Little did I know that this venture would prove to be an extraordinary experience, filled with profound lessons and eye-opening moments.
Amidst the excitement, I couldn’t ignore the cautionary advice from friends and extended family members, warning me to be careful or even questioning my sanity for taking this path. However, their concerns failed to sway my determination to work within the confines of the prison walls.
During my initial conversation with my supervisor, she asked me about my biggest worry or fear regarding the counselling sessions. Expecting my answer to revolve around wearing a hijab (a headscarf), she surprised me by saying, “No, it’s not about your attire. Your greatest challenge will be dealing with the emotions of your clients, as you leave and return to the outside world while they remain trapped behind these walls.” Those words struck a chord within me, resonating deeply and leaving a lasting impression.
As I delved into my work at the prison, I discovered that all my clients were on good behaviour and yearning for a change in their lives. However, they were unsure of where and how to begin this transformative journey. It became apparent that 90% of them carried childhood traumas, concealed behind a façade they wore to protect themselves from further pain.
Working within the prison walls shattered my preconceived notions about men and granted me a profound understanding of their experiences from the other side. This experience proved to be the most enriching and enlightening of my career thus far.
Throughout this journey, my supervisor played an invaluable role as a pillar of support. Her expertise as a counsellor was awe-inspiring, and I found myself continuously learning and drawing inspiration from her guidance and example.
This experience at HMP Prison has transformed my mindset and deepened my empathy for those within the criminal justice system. It has reinforced my belief in the power of counselling and the potential for positive change, even in the most challenging of environments.
